Pop Andino: The Highland Glow-Up

Otavalo Syncopations and Digital Cumbia

Pop andino is defined on the dance floor by its acoustic and rhythmic mechanics: traditional highland instruments operating inside the clean compression of contemporary pop, cumbia, and club tempos. Rather than background decoration, the charango, quenacho, and Andean flutes lead the melodic hooks. Otavalo solo singer-songwriter Ñusta Picuasi anchors her sound in this interplay, pairing traditional elements with urban rhythms. On “Tu piel,” issued with an official video in March 2026 featuring Inti Picuasi and Salomé Quevedo filmed in Quito, she pushed her arrangement directly into what she described as cumbia with an urban fusion.

Picuasi, who holds over 11,000 monthly Spotify listeners, began releasing original material with 2023’s “Mi corazón” after establishing herself by translating tracks into Kichwa alongside Spanish and English covers. Her singles catalog moves across styles without ditching highland woodwinds: “Ananay” arrived in 2024, followed by the Jandino collaboration “Te dije” (which picked up a TC Music Awards nomination for Best Collaboration and later received a 2025 acoustic version). In September 2025, she issued “Vuela,” a self-love track linking Indigenous tradition with current pop pacing, followed by a second official video version in October 2025, alongside 2025 singles “Quiero Saber” and “Real.”

Sharing the Imbabura territory is Mana Maymanda, a six-member Kichwa Otavalo outfit from the Peguche community. Unlike the solo pop structures coming out of coastal studios, Mana Maymanda builds out dense group polyphonies sung in their mother tongue, tracking everyday Otavalo customs. In February 2025, they dropped official videos for both the festive “Kimsa Llakta (Inti Raymi)” and “Juyashka Panigu.” Written by Roberto Lema with arrangements split between the band and Randall Ballesteros, “Juyashka Panigu” hits with club-ready percussion. Under the video, one viewer singled out the instrumental drop: “El mejor momento 4:03” (“The best moment is 4:03”).

Fandangos, Bombas, and Live Collaborations

Beyond four-on-the-floor pop, regional rhythms dictate the bounce of the current playlist. Fandango and bomba cadences drive recent releases like the January 2026 track “Vyckow ft Ñusta Sisa (Fandango)” issued by Amorcito, alongside the June 2025 cut “Vyckow POP ANDINO” put out by Se fue (Bomba). These tracks pull fast-shuffling highland dance beats straight into synthesized basslines.

Collaborative projects carry the same live-wire kineticism. In September 2026, FAN delivered “Milena Warthon x Los Mirlos | Performance,” crossing generation-spanning cumbia guitar work with pop pacing. In June 2025, VICTORIA issued “Milena Warthon (Video Oficial).” The release struck a broad chord across listeners; as one commenter posted under the clip, “A ti no te siguen ‘puras niñas’, te siguen familias” (“Families follow you, not ‘just girls'”).

Mana Maymanda previously mapped similar territory on the track “Chimbapurashpa,” another fandango credited to songwriter Roberto Lema with production by Ballesteros, while earlier output like the 14-track 2018 record Kashnamari established their template of communal rhythms delivered entirely in Kichwa.

Defining the Tag from Ayacucho to the Páramo

Milena Warthon adopted the term “pop andino” in late 2019 to identify this fusion of pop songwriting and Andean instrumentation, emphasizing that the label is defined as much by its lyrical content and thematic focus as by its arrangements. That approach surfaced directly in “Florecer,” her cross-border collaboration with Picuasi. The track synthesizes Quechua and Kichwa lyrics, pop structures, charango, quenacho, and flutes, utilizing textures inspired directly by the vegetation of the páramo.

In Ayacucho, the sound fractures into alternative urban territory through artists like SÖFY (Sofía Quinto Navarro). Starting out with acoustic covers posted to YouTube and Facebook, SÖFY built an urban-alternative lane designed to reassert Peruvian music. On November 21, 2022, she released “Infinito,” balancing electronic production against traditional Andean instrumentation and lyrical phrasing that flips between Quechua and Spanish.

Production continues to emerge directly from community studios across the highlands, from SÖFY’s alternative arrangements in Ayacucho to Mana Maymanda cuts like “Ayapa Churi,” tracked with Randall Ballesteros S at Grande Liga Records in Peguche.
